Cristiano Ronaldo became the first player in World Cup history to score in six editions of the tournament after the Portugal captain found the net against Uzbekistan. Ronaldo came in for criticism after a disappointing performance against DR Congo in Portugal's opening match but needed less than six minutes to give his team the lead in their Group K match at Houston Stadium. Joao Cancelo set up the goal with a fine run down the right flank, before putting a low cross into the penalty area. Always ready to strike, Ronaldo volleyed towards goal from six meters and tucked the ball inside the near post to give his team the lead.

The 41-year-old then scored again after being set up by Bruno Fernandes. He timed his run into the right side of the area perfectly, guiding a shot into the bottom right corner. Ronaldo made his first World Cup appearance in 2006 at the age of 21, scoring a goal as Portugal reached the semi-finals. He scored a goal in both the 2010 and 2014 tournaments, where Portugal disappointed, before scoring four goals at the 2018 World Cup. He then scored a goal at the 2022 World Cup, when Portugal reached the quarter-finals.

Although Ronaldo has yet to score in the World Cup knockout rounds or appear in a final, he became only the second player to feature in six editions of the tournament, a day after rival Lionel Messi became the first. Messi scored his first World Cup hat-trick, equaling Miroslav Klose's all-time goalscoring record, in a 3–0 win over Algeria in Kansas City. He then scored twice more in Argentina's 2-0 win against Austria yesterday. Although Messi failed to score in his five matches at the 2010 World Cup, when Argentina were eliminated by Germany in the quarter-finals, the 38-year-old now holds the record for World Cup goals (18) and appearances (28).

Ronaldo's 10 World Cup goals are still far from Messi's total, but he could surpass Germany's Lothar Matthaus for the second-most appearances of all time if Portugal reach the knockout rounds of the 48-team tournament. Compliments came quickly after Ronaldo's record goal, with former Manchester United teammate Owen Hargreaves saying: "Cristiano delivers, when he gets the serve, he delivers. Everywhere he went, he did that. It's only nine minutes, but the game plan worked. You need more urgency, you need people running deep, Cristiano has people closer to him. There's so much attacking power."

On ITV, commentator and former England defender Lee Dixon said: "You can feel the tension being released, the shivers down your spine. Everyone who loves football will be happy he scored. He's fired up now. When the ball goes wide, at his age he doesn't need to sprint at full speed. He's astute and cuts in. The timing of his run into the cross is absolutely perfect.
