World Cup 2026: Cristiano Ronaldo becomes the first man to score in six World Cups
Cristiano Ronaldo made history by becoming the first man to score in six World Cups, achieving this feat during the 2026 match against Uzbekistan.
With history on the line, Cristiano Ronaldo had a disappointing start to the 2026 World Cup. He only needed one goal to become the first man to score in six editions of the tournament. Although he failed to score in his first match, where Portugal drew 1-1 against the Democratic Republic of Congo, he did not make his fans wait long to reach this milestone. In Tuesday's match against Uzbekistan, Ronaldo officially set the record, scoring a goal in the fifth minute of play to give Portugal a 1-0 lead. He found himself in the right place — right in front of the goal — when teammate João Cancelo delivered a perfect cross. Ronaldo hit the ball, sending it past the goalkeeper before he could dive. But Ronaldo didn't stop there: in the 39th minute, the Portugal captain struck again. Bruno Fernandes cracked the Uzbek defense with a perfect through ball, sending his former Manchester United teammate deep. Ronaldo struck on the run and calmly slotted the ball into the bottom left corner, extending Portugal's lead to 3-0. This goal allowed Ronaldo to overtake Eusébio and become Portugal's all-time top scorer in the World Cup, with 10 goals in total. At 41, Ronaldo has set numerous records during his long career with Portugal. He already holds the record for appearances and goals for a player with a men's national team. Before the start of the 2026 World Cup, Ronaldo had already made 228 appearances — and counting — for the national team. After Tuesday's goal, he scored a team-record 145 goals. Ronaldo has some work to do if he is to climb the all-time World Cup scoring charts. He arrived at the 2026 World Cup with eight goals under his belt. Three other players — Messi, Kylian Mbappé and Harry Kane — came into the event with more World Cup goals than Ronaldo. With Tuesday's goals, Ronaldo now has a total of 10 goals in his six World Cups, placing him on an elite list of only 16 other players with double-digit goals in the tournament.
