Cody Gakpo, Liverpool striker, finds himself at the center of one of the most intriguing topics of the summer transfer window, with Tottenham having shown interest in him. According to Fabrizio Romano, a transfer market expert, "there is interest from Tottenham in Cody Gakpo. Several teams are trying to understand if there is a possibility of reaching an agreement for Gakpo. To date, Liverpool have not given the green light for his exit. They are still satisfied with him and will have to make a decision, not during the World Cup, it will take time."

These words are significant: interest is not the same as an offer and exploring a deal is not the same as an invitation to Liverpool to sell the player. However, in the transfer market, this is often how a story begins, with clubs trying to understand the situation before engaging in serious negotiations. Liverpool's position seems clear at the moment: they are satisfied with Cody Gakpo and have not authorized his transfer.

This is important because, unlike a fringe player who is quietly moved towards the exit door, Gakpo still has obvious value to the team. He offers flexibility in attack, can play on the left, operate centrally and provide tactical variety. In a season where Liverpool will need depth, rotation and reliability, selling him would only make sense if the finances were attractive and there was already a secure replacement path.

Tottenham's interest is understandable. Gakpo has Premier League experience, an international pedigree and a profile that can appeal to a club looking for strikers capable of hitting in different areas. He is not a one-role striker, and that makes him useful, and useful players are expensive. Romano's note that there will not be a decision "during the World Cup" is also significant. Big tournaments can distort the market: a good performance can raise a player's profile, while a disappointing campaign can dampen interest. Clubs often prefer to wait, reevaluate and avoid emotional evaluations.

For Liverpool, patience may be the most sensible choice. There is no urgency in making a decision on Gakpo when Tottenham and others are still at the stage of working out whether a deal is even possible. Here Liverpool must be cautious: selling Cody Gakpo to Tottenham would not be a simple squad adjustment. It would strengthen a domestic rival and take away a proven attacking option from Anfield. There may be a price at which each player becomes available, but Liverpool's position should remain firm. If Tottenham want Gakpo, it should make Liverpool feel uncomfortable. Until then, the interest remains as it is and Liverpool remain in control.
