Anything can happen at the World Cup, and Friday's match in the round of 16 threatened to become one of the biggest surprises in the tournament's history. Argentina achieved a dramatic 3-2 victory against Cape Verde, the real surprise of the tournament. The game remained close for much of the second half, forcing extra time — a goal from Lionel Messi and an equalizer from Deroy Duarte were the key moments. Lisandro Martínez scored in the opening minutes of the first extra half, but Sidny Lopes Cabral equalized in the 103rd minute. Ultimately, Diney Borges scored the decisive goal in the 111th minute, allowing Argentina to maintain their lead and win 3-2. Now, what awaits Argentina at the 2026 FIFA World Cup? After the victory over Cape Verde, Argentina will face Egypt, who beat Australia on penalties, in the round of 16. The Argentina-Egypt match will take place at the Atlanta Stadium on Tuesday, July 7 at 6:00 pm local time. If Argentina were to advance past Egypt, they could face Switzerland, who beat Algeria in the round of 16, or Colombia, who got the better of Ghana, in the quarter-finals. If Argentina advances, the quarterfinal match will be held at Kansas City Stadium on Saturday, July 11 at 9 p.m. Should Argentina reach the semi-finals, they will have four possible opponents: the winner of England vs Mexico or the winner of Brazil vs Norway. If further advanced, the semifinal will be played at Atlanta Stadium on Wednesday, July 15 at 9 p.m.
