Chelsea targeting Leeds' Gabriel Gudmundsson - why would the Whites ask for a high price?

Chelsea are eyeing Leeds United's Gabriel Gudmundsson as a possible replacement for Marc Cucurella, who recently moved to Real Madrid. Leeds manager Daniel Farke considers Gudmundsson indispensable and is expected to demand a significant price if Chelsea decide to pursue him.

Chelsea are currently looking for a reinforcement on the left of their defense and have set their sights on Leeds United player Gabriel Gudmundsson. After Marc Cucurella's transfer to Real Madrid for a considerable fee, the Blues now find themselves with a big void to fill. According to what reported by Swedish journalist Anel Avdic, Gudmundsson has become one of the priorities for Chelsea in this summer session. Arriving at Elland Road only last summer from Lille for a modest fee of £10m, the 27-year-old has made 35 appearances, quickly becoming a regular starter in Daniel Farke's eleven. The player's high-level performances have attracted the attention of Chelsea, who now want to test Leeds' resolve. For Farke, losing his starting left-back after just a year would be a real nightmare. The manager considers Gudmundsson essential to the solidity of his defence, especially after a difficult season. Leeds have all the cards in order, as the player has signed a long-term contract tying him to the club until 2029. There is no reason for the Elland Road management to accept a low offer. If Chelsea formalize their interest, Leeds are expected to ask for at least £30 million, thus tripling their initial investment. Farke needs guarantees that the funds raised from a possible sale are not just used to balance the books, but reinvested in the team. With Illan Meslier already leaving on a free transfer, losing another defensive pillar without receiving adequate compensation would be a mistake. On the other hand, football is also a business. A significant profit would allow Leeds to strengthen several positions. The club have already submitted a competitive £20 million bid for Southampton midfielder Shea Charles. Selling Gudmundsson would provide Farke with the financial resources needed to outbid the competition in other deals. Replacing a left back isn't complicated - there are plenty of younger, cheaper options available in Europe for a fraction of that price. Management can't afford to have feelings. If Chelsea reaches the valuation, it is appropriate to sell the player. Creating a significant financial surplus while strengthening the midfield makes perfect sense.
