Jesse Marsch assured that Canada will "give it their all" in Los Angeles, after losing home advantage to qualify for the round of 16 of the World Cup thanks to their second place in Group B. Canada knew that a draw in their last match against Switzerland would be enough to finish in first place and thus play their first knockout match in Vancouver. However, goals from Ruben Vargas and Johan Manzambi in the second half were enough to secure Switzerland a 2–1 victory, with Promise David's goal proving to be only a consolation. Canada reached the World Cup round of 16 with just four points (1 win, 1 draw, 1 loss), the lowest score by a host nation to qualify from the group stage since 1994 (also four points). They also lost their final three games of the tournament when tied at halftime, as they did against France and Russia in 1986. But Marsch is determined not to dwell on that result and is confident Canada will give their best despite having to travel to the US. "Look, it's been fantastic, and that's the disappointment, we want to continue the energy that's been created here in Canada," he told ITV. "I've had these World Cups and big moments in my career, and I know that after a big win, building on that is key. I'm disappointed that I couldn't get a win or a draw to stay here. I'm very grateful for the energy in the country and certainly in the stadium. "But we're going to go to LA, where there will probably be an adverse crowd, and it will be a little bit more difficult, but we still want to electrify our country and play really well down there, and give it our all. "We're exactly where we want to be. We finished second in the group, we're in the elimination round and now we're giving it our all." For the first time ever, we are in the round of 16 of a men's World Cup!
