Tom Atcheson scored and was sent off in Northern Ireland's 1-0 friendly win over Guinea. The Blackburn Rovers defender scored the opening goal in the ninth minute, deflecting Isaac Price's cross into the net. This is Atcheson's first international goal, after making his debut as a substitute in the match against Wales in March. Northern Ireland, with a very young team, started the match well, but had to suffer towards the end to maintain their lead. O'Neill fielded the youngest team since 1945 for this match, with an average age of 22.1 years. In addition to the debut of Kieran Morrison (brought from Liverpool), Ceadach O'Neill (Arsenal) was also given his debut, with the latter being replaced by O'Neill in the match. Guinea, despite being without their star striker Serhou Guirassy (Borussia Dortmund), responded to a 1-0 deficit and created several first-half chances, all of which were saved by goalkeeper Pierce Charles and the Northern Ireland defence. In the second half, despite three substitutions, Northern Ireland started pushing again and almost doubled their lead with Jamie Reid, who however missed a goal into an empty net. At the end, however, there were problems for Northern Ireland: Atcheson was sent off for a last-man foul on Abdoul Karim Traoré. Guinea tried to take advantage of the situation, even hitting the crossbar, but Northern Ireland managed to maintain their lead, thus achieving victory in this friendly.
