"When you pass under that famous sign in the Anfield tunnel, you feel a mix of emotions. Responsibility, of course. For the rich history of this club. Expectations, of course. To honor the legacy that Liverpool have created over the last 134 years as one of the greatest teams in world football. And determination. To fight. To win. To bring success to an Anfield crowd so known around the world," Slot opens in his letter.
The Dutch coach then talks about the championship title won under his guidance. "It was not just a trophy, but also a reward for the hard work, sacrifices and dedication of so many people within the club. It was even more meaningful because you experienced it together with us. Singing our songs, applauding the goals. And on the day we lifted the trophy, you were there. Along the streets outside the stadium, Anfield was full."
For Slot, this was particularly special, as he knew that the title in 2020 could not be celebrated properly due to the pandemic. Slot's farewell letter also mentions the incident during the title celebrations, when a car plowed into cheering fans. And it also talks about the death of Diogo Jota. “I want to remember him above all as a teammate, a friend and an incredible person who touched the lives of thousands of you.”
"In one of the most difficult times this club has experienced, the love, compassion and support of the Liverpool family was extraordinary. As I leave this club, it would be remiss of me not to say that the way you honored Diogo and celebrated his memory together will remain with me forever. The bond we share goes beyond football, beyond European evenings under the lights of Anfield or the sound of You'll Never Walk Alone ringing out from the Kop."
Slot then thanks his players, staff, club management and club legends who have "supported him and taught him the Liverpool Way". "I also leave with the feeling that the club is exactly where it needs to be: among Europe's elite. Achieving Champions League football was a huge responsibility and ensures that Liverpool can continue to play at the highest level next season and beyond. I leave with full confidence in the future.
