Alberto Aquilani described it as an honor to be able to coach his former teammate Domenico Berardi after being appointed coach of Sassuolo. The former midfielder, 41, was announced as the team's new head coach on Friday, taking on his first role in Serie A after previously managing Pisa and Catanzaro in Serie B. Aquilani shared the pitch with Berardi when the midfielder played for Sassuolo in the 2016-17 season, and now Berardi continues to be a key player for the club. With 424 appearances in all competitions, Berardi has scored 156 goals and provided 103 assists. Since his Serie A debut in the 2013-14 season, Berardi has directly contributed to the sixth-highest number of goals among top-flight footballers (139). Aquilani is thrilled to have the opportunity to coach Berardi and said: "Finding him in this role is a bit strange, because I had the chance to play with him and appreciate his incredible qualities. He has been here for many years and has always pushed this team towards important goals. For me it will be an honor to coach him. I know it is a difficult championship, but I feel ready to face it with this team and this club. To the fans, it is a pleasure to see them again. I wish everyone the best and I assure you that My staff and I will give our best so that Sassuolo can have the satisfaction it deserves.",
