The Group J finale at Kansas City Stadium provided one of the most exciting matches of the 2026 World Cup, with Algeria and Austria facing off in a high-voltage thriller that ended 3-3. With Argentina already qualified top of the group, both teams knew that the result would determine who would get second place: Austria needed a point, while Algeria needed a win to secure automatic passage.

The match brought back memories of the infamous "Gijón Disgrace" of 1982, when the two national teams had previously faced each other in a controversial match. Austria opened the scoring in the 28th minute with a precise long ball from David Alaba to Marko Arnautovic, who took advantage of goalkeeper Oussama Benbot's indecision to score his first World Cup goal. Algeria responded in spectacular fashion just before half-time, with Rafik Belghali making a fantastic solo run through the Austrian defense to slot an unstoppable shot into the top corner.

The second half replicated the drama of the first: Marcel Sabitzer restored Austria's lead ten minutes after returning to the pitch, converting neatly at the end of a rapid counterattack orchestrated by Konrad Laimer's run down the right. Algerian captain and former Manchester City player Riyad Mahrez equalized for the second time in the 60th minute, sealing a goal with an elegant shot into the top corner following a precise through ball from Houssem Aouar.

With Algeria searching for the goal that would secure qualification, Mahrez produced the most significant moment of his World Cup career, scoring deep in injury time to put the Desert Foxes 3-2 up. However, Austria did not give up and substitute Sasa Kalajdzic, with practically the last touch of the match, headed a stunning equalizer in the sixth minute of added time, salvaging a result which, crucially, was all the Austrian team needed.

Both teams advance, with Austria qualifying in second place on goal difference and Algeria, who face Switzerland in the round of 16, continuing as one of the best third-placed teams, in one of the most exciting group stage matches so far.
