"If you are at Milan, you must be there 100%", these are the words of coach Ruben Amorim regarding the attacker. Leao was present in the stands to watch the Rossoneri's last match in the championship, the 1-0 victory over Venezia, and made some statements to the media.
"It's a difficult moment, I said goodbye to my teammates after seven years. Everyone here has always helped me grow and do things at a high level, I represented a great club like Milan. Today the time has come to say goodbye, even if I would have liked to do it in another way. I would have liked to be at San Siro again for all the fans who supported me and helped me, even in the less beautiful moments. I am in the history of this club, I know what I did and life is like that. Today we say goodbye, but the love I have for Milan will never end. I will always follow him from afar."
Leao then added: "I cried, obviously. The emotion... It's there." Finally, a word for your new coach: "He's a great coach, I like his football."
Leao's numbers with Milan
Arriving at the Rossoneri on 1 August 2019 for 30 million euros, Leao went through seven seasons between consecration, Scudetto and difficult moments. 2021-22 is that of the definitive explosion, with 14 goals and 12 assists in 42 appearances, while the following year he closes with 16 goals and 15 assists in 48 games. In 2023-24 there are 15 goals and 14 assists in 47 appearances, before the decline: 12 goals and 13 assists in 2024-25 and 10 goals and 3 assists in the last season. However, the overall balance remains enormous: 291 appearances, 80 goals and 65 assists.
Chelsea's 100 million became Galatasaray's 40 million
Now Leao leaves from Galatasaray, who overcame Aston Villa's competition, guaranteeing him a contract worth 10 million euros per season plus 2 million bonuses. Milan will instead collect 40 million plus 3 in bonuses, with a capital gain of more than 30 million and savings on the heaviest salary of the squad. The regret remains for the 100 million refused to Chelsea in the summer of 2022, shortly after the scudetto and the title of MVP. A story that ended between love, criticism and regret, with Leao leaving Milan knowing that he had written an important page in the Rossoneri's history, but also with the feeling that he could have done even more.
What happens now
With Leao at Galatasaray, Milan will now have to focus on strengthening their team in view of the next Serie A season. The Rossoneri management is called upon to find a suitable replacement to maintain their ambitions of competing at the highest levels. In the meantime, the fans will continue to follow Leao with affection, while his new coach, Ruben Amorim, will have to integrate him into Galatasaray's game to maximize his potential.
