The fourth episode of BBC Radio Merseyside's A to Z focuses on the letter D, in particular legendary striker and coach Sir Kenny Dalglish. Dalglish made 515 appearances in 13 years for the Reds, scoring 172 goals and winning a large number of trophies; including six championship titles and three European Cups as both a player and manager. The Radio Merseyside team have put the Scottish footballer's career under the magnifying glass, highlighting a couple of his most memorable goals. "The goal I remember was in the derby at Goodison Park in 1985-86 when he scored in the first minute," Paul Salt said. "Fortunately, it was broadcast on TV for foreign audiences, so there is a record of him. And at that time he played less, but that goal was really something extraordinary, don't you think?" Carl Woodward added: "Yes, he's one of those players like your Steven Gerrard or your Mo Salah who scores important goals, extraordinary goals. It doesn't matter if they don't play as much or if they're older, they continue to score those important goals. Okay, we're moving away from the past a bit, but think about that goal against Chelsea in 1986: he didn't play much, but he came into the team because Paul Walsh got injured and he went on to win the title by scoring Chelsea". After a hugely prestigious playing career, Dalglish served as player-manager at Liverpool for five years, from 1985 to 1990, when he relinquished his player title and continued as manager until February of the following year, when he unexpectedly resigned. His career has become iconic at Anfield, with that decisive goal scored against Chelsea in 1986 being played out again and again as the club and fans take a step back in time. “I still think about that goal because it doesn't seem real,” Salt said. "You can't write that. You could never write that: a player-coach who scores the title-winning goal. There has never been a player-coach who won the championship and who scored the title-winning goal." Click play above to listen to the full segment, or listen here on BBC Sounds.
